About Darwin City

Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory, is a beguiling cultural phenomenon with a mixutue of modern Darwin Accommodation and adventurous Darwin Activities and Tours. Lying at the upper Northern tip of Australia, this jutting peninsula (surrounded by ocean) merges three cultures – Asian, Indigenous and Anglo-Australian – in a melting pot born from its rich, sometimes turbulent, history. Any city has its own character, but Darwin is the black sheep of Australia – which is partly what makes it so endearing and beloved by so many visitors.
The nearby outback spills into this city, making it a wonderful inclusion on any trip to Uluru, and a great way to experience the vibrant indigenous culture of Australia. At the same time, it offers a striking contrast between its original Anglo-Australian settlement, and its 1970’s reconstruction. While its post-war Asian influence (often considered the “Asian gateway of Australia”) has added a unique flavour of its own. It’s an other-worldly place, making it an experience not to be missed, where the locals march to their own beat, and visitors are welcomed and ushered to join in the Darwin way. Watching some truly magnificent coastal storms; drifting away to a glowing sunset; or pondering life as you gaze at a glowing night sky, alive with more stars than you probably realised are in the sky – these are the simple pleasures that enchant Darwinians, and equally seduce those who step into this sometimes strange, but always wonderful, world. Even nature works a little different in these parts – it’s dual seasonal change, between wet and dry, knows no winter.

It’s also known for its unique cuisine - especially its local favourites, such as succulent mud crab or Barramindi. Its Asian influence combines with Australiana for a Jackfruit Curry you wont find anywhere else. Or for the ultimate Darwinian treat, why not chew on some crocodile jerky?

Its markets are known throughout Australia; Darwin boasts more markets than most of its larger capital counterparts. In particular, make sure you visit the Mindil Beach Sunset markets, where shopping and setting combine for an afternoon where you wont know whether to browse the goods or soak in the postcard!

There truly is nowhere else like Darwin! Leave your life behind, and return to it perhaps a little better for having been a part of this iconic Aussie city.
